Control #13: Cloud IAM Misuse โ Preventing Privilege Creep & Role Explosion
โYour IAM policies are your cloud firewall. If theyโre broken, so is everything else.โ
๐งจ The IAM Problem Is Hiddenโฆ Until It’s Not
Cloud breaches often follow this pattern:
- A user gets phished or their session is hijacked
- Their account has more access than required (privilege creep)
- No alert fires because the account is โnormalโ
- Attackers access storage buckets, APIs, databases
๐ Investigations later reveal:
- Users had full admin access for months
- Hundreds of unused roles lingered with dangerous permissions
- No expiry on temp access or 3rd-party tokens
๐ What Is IAM Privilege Creep?
Privilege Creep happens when:
- Users or services accumulate more permissions over time
- Roles are duplicated with slight variations
- Temporary access becomes permanent
- Service accounts are over-permissioned by default
It leads to:
- Unnecessary risk
- Lateral movement paths
- Audit complexity and policy fatigue
โ 5-Step IAM Misuse Test โ CloudCSF Style
- List All Users, Roles & Policies
- Include cloud users, IAM roles, service accounts, federated users
- Use CSP tools or IAM discovery APIs
- Run Least Privilege Reports
- AWS: IAM Access Analyzer, GCP: IAM Recommender, Azure: PIM Insights
- Identify unused permissions and overbroad policies
- Check for Privilege Creep Patterns
- Look for:
- Roles with โ*โ permissions
- Users in multiple high-priv groups
- Expired users still active
- Look for:
- Analyze Role Explosion
- How many custom roles exist?
- Are they templated and re-used or copy-pasted?
- Enforce Just-In-Time Access
- Use Azure PIM, GCP IAM Conditions, AWS IAM Identity Center
- Temporary elevation > permanent access
๐ IAM Control Maturity Levels
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| ๐ซ 0 โ Open Access | Users/roles have excessive, permanent rights |
| โ ๏ธ 1 โ Manual Reviews | No tooling, ad-hoc IAM audits |
| ๐ 2 โ CSP Native Tools | IAM Access Analyzer, PIM used quarterly |
| ๐ 3 โ Automated Least Privilege Reports | Periodic right-sizing and alerts |
| ๐ก๏ธ 4 โ JIT Access + Role Hygiene | Real-time control with tight scope |
๐ ๏ธ Tools You Can Use
- โ AWS IAM Access Analyzer, GCP Recommender, Azure PIM
- โ Ermetic, JupiterOne, ConductorOne, Sonrai Security
- โ Open Policy Agent (OPA), Rego for custom IAM policies
- โ CSP Audit Reports: CloudTrail, CloudWatch, Stackdriver
๐ก CloudCSF Pro Tip
โDonโt fix IAM once. Fix it continuously. Rights are like weeds โ they grow back.โ
