π― Goal: Help organizations test and fix overexposed cloud storage like S3, Azure Blob, and GCP Buckets.

π CloudCSF Day 5
Control #4: Secure Cloud Storage β Audit Bucket Permissions & Lock Down Access
βIf your cloud bucket is public, your reputation is one scan away from a breach.β
π¨ The Silent Leak: Overexposed Cloud Storage
In 2024 alone, over 3.5 billion records were leaked from misconfigured cloud buckets.
Hereβs what we keep seeing:
- S3 buckets named
prod-customer-dataare public - Azure Blob containers holding invoices are unencrypted
- GCP buckets with logs have anonymous read access
π Cloud storage is a high-value target β and attackers use tools like Bucket Finder, Grayhat Warfare, and URL fuzzers to scan for them every day.
π What Is Cloud Storage Security?
This control ensures:
- No public exposure (unless explicitly intended)
- Encryption at rest and in transit
- Access policies are tightly scoped
- Logging & alerting on access attempts
- Lifecycle rules for data retention and deletion
β 5-Step Bucket Audit β CloudCSF Style
- List All Buckets Across Providers
- AWS:
aws s3 ls - Azure:
az storage container list - GCP:
gsutil ls
- AWS:
- Check Public Access Flags
- AWS:
BlockPublicAcls,IgnorePublicAcls - Azure:
PublicAccessLevel - GCP: IAM bindings with
allUsers
- AWS:
- Scan Bucket Policies + ACLs
- Use
Prowler,ScoutSuite, or CSPM tools - Look for
s3:GetObjectorstorage.objects.getwith wildcards
- Use
- Verify Encryption Settings
- Is encryption enabled by default?
- Are keys managed via KMS?
- Simulate an Access Attempt
- Try to fetch files without authentication
- Review logs for unauthorized access attempts
π― Storage Security Maturity Levels
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| π« 0 β Wide Open | Buckets public by default |
| β οΈ 1 β Manual Lockdown | Closed manually, inconsistent enforcement |
| π 2 β Partial Policies | Some buckets follow policy |
| π 3 β Enforced Policy + Monitoring | IAM + SCP + Alerts |
| π‘οΈ 4 β Zero Trust Cloud Storage | Just-in-time access + token-based access |
π οΈ Tools You Can Use
- β AWS Trusted Advisor, Azure Security Center, GCP Security Command Center
- β S3Scanner, GCPBucketBrute, ScoutSuite
- β Prowler + Terraform + Sentinel/OPA for policy enforcement

π‘ CloudCSF Pro Tip
βTreat cloud buckets like bank vaults, not Dropbox folders.β
