Control #28: Orphaned Cloud Resources β Attack Surface You Forgot Exists
βResources without an owner are resources without accountability.β
π£ What Are Orphaned Cloud Resources?
Orphaned resources are:
- Unused compute, storage, or IAM entities from older projects
- Detached security groups, elastic IPs, volumes
- Forgotten resources after team turnover or cloud migrations
These are unmonitored, unpatched, and often publicly exposed.
π₯ Common Examples
| Resource Type | Orphaned Risk |
|---|---|
| EC2 with no tags or monitoring | Compromised and used for crypto mining |
| S3 bucket left by ex-team | Becomes a public data leak |
| IAM roles with no last used date | Persisting privilege with no accountability |
| Snapshots and AMIs | Contain credentials or keys |
π οΈ CloudCSF Audit Actions
π Discovery
- Enable resource tagging policies
- Use cloud-native tools:
- AWS Config + Trusted Advisor
- Azure Advisor + Resource Graph
- GCP Asset Inventory
π§Ή Remediation
- Auto-delete unused volumes, IPs, snapshots
- Trigger alerts for resources with no access for 60β90 days
- Assign resource owners or “No Owner” tag with follow-up task
π Tools:
- Cloud Custodian, CloudMapper, Steampipe, ScoutSuite
