Control #27: Shadow API Exposure β What You Donβt See Can Hurt You
βNot all APIs are documented. But attackers find them anyway.β
π± What Are Shadow APIs?
Shadow APIs are:
- APIs created by developers but not registered or documented
- Legacy APIs no longer in use but still reachable
- APIs left exposed after migration or dev/test cycles
These APIs are invisible to the security team but exploitable by attackers.
π Real-World Risks
| Shadow API Flaw | Risk |
|---|---|
| No auth/token check | Full data exposure |
| Exposes internal logic | Enumeration, abuse |
| Unpatched API version | RCE or injection |
| Accepts undocumented input | Bypass rules or validation |
π οΈ CloudCSF Audit Checklist
π Discover & Monitor
- Run API inventory tools like Traceable, Salt, Noname, Akto
- Scan API gateways for unmapped endpoints
- Compare deployed APIs vs known documentation (Swagger/OpenAPI)
β Secure Shadow APIs
- Block or deprecate unused endpoints
- Enforce standard authentication on all APIs
- Integrate with API gateway policies to track and control all traffic
π Tools:
- APIsec, OWASP APISecurity Top 10, Postman Security Scans
- Cloudflare API Shield, AWS WAF + API Gateway Logging
π§ CloudCSF Maturity Index β API Exposure
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| π΄ L0 | APIs discovered after breach |
| π L1 | Manual inventory, no alerting |
| π‘ L2 | Logs + alerting enabled |
| π’ L3 | Full discovery, auth enforced |
| π΅ L4 | Automated posture scoring + blocking |
